A dental fillings are a restorative material used by your Scripps Ranch Dentist to restore a tooth back to its original function, integrity and structure.  Most often times, it is used to fill a tooth that was drilled out because of decay.   In addition, restorative materials can be used to improve the aesthetic of a tooth. Dental restorations can also refer to the crown on top of an implant.

There are two different type of restorative material.  One is direct restorative materials and the other is indirect restorative materials.  The basic difference between the two is that the indirect restorative material is fabricated inside a lab.   This is cemented into a tooth.  Direct restorative materials are a material that will bond to the tooth and  is used and fabricated inside the office to restore the tooth.  Your Scripps ranch dentist uses the new direct restorative material that is bonded into the tooth and is tooth colored.  This material is called Composite.

Direct restorative materials include:

    1. Composite- white bonded fillings

    2. Amalgam fills (silver fills)

Indirect restorative materials:

Indirect restorative materials fall under the category of fixed prosthodontics.   The means the   material is fabricated outside the dental office and it is cemented in the mouth permanently.  Some include the following:

   1. Inlays

   2. Onlays

   3. Crowns

   4. Implant Crowns

   5. Veneers
